My Poster Of Modal Verbs In Its Usage

Directions: Create your own poster of the modal verb and its. Usage you may use any type of graphic organizer to summarize your insights. Use the template given below. You may refer to the example given.​

Modal verbs are used to communicate permission, restriction (not allowing something), obligation, and absence of duty. For a simple poster, just no need for much explanation.

  • Permission – can, could, may

‘Can’ is the most common word for requesting or granting permission, but ‘may’ and ‘could’ are also acceptable alternatives. Insights:

– Can you lend me a pen?

– You may occupy this seat; it is vacant.

– May I please open the window?

– May I ask a question here?

  • Prohibition

“Can’t” and “mustn’t” are used to indicate that something is prohibited (not allowed). Insight:

– You can’t go into that restaurant without a dress.

– She can’t drive in this country unless she is over eighteen.

– You mustn’t use your phone in my class.

‘Can not’ typically connotes something that is against the rules. Typically, must not indicate that the speaker establishes the rule.

  • Obligation

“Have to” and “must” are both expressions of obligation. There is a tiny distinction between their respective applications.

“Have to” indicates that the responsibility is imposed by someone other than the speaker. Typically, this refers to a rule or law. Insight:

– We must arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to departure.

– I have to work at the weekend.

The word ‘must’ indicates that the obligation is imposed by the speaker.

– My thesis must be submitted by tomorrow.

– I must phone my parents immediately.

Here’s an illustration of the distinction between ‘have to’ and ‘must’ :

– My doctor said that I have to stop smoking or I’ll get serious problems. (I have no choice)

– I must stop smoking. It’s costing me too much money and time. (it’s my decision)

We use “don’t have to” to indicate that there is no requirement. You may choose to do something, but it is not required.

– You don’t have to wear a dress to go to that restaurant but it would be nice.

– You didn’t have to call for us. I could have got a cab.

– Students don’t have to wear suits to school.
